Why Parents Need to Prioritize Their Health (and How It Benefits the Whole Family)

As parents, we’re quick to invest in our kids—signing them up for every sport, camp, or clinic that might help them grow, develop skills, and stay healthy. But when it comes to ourselves? We hesitate. We put our needs on the back burner. We say, "Maybe later." We tell ourselves that being a good parent means sacrificing for our kids. But what if it also means investing in ourselves—so we can actually show up for them long-term?
Taking care of your own health isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. And it’s one of the most powerful things you can do for your children.
The Reality: Your Health Impacts Their Lives
Think about it: the better you feel physically and mentally, the more present you can be. Not just showing up to watch the game, but actually playing in the parents vs. kids scrimmage. Not just surviving the day, but truly engaging with your family.
Carl, one of our owners at Sycamore CrossFit, recently experienced this firsthand. His youngest daughter had a parents vs. kids soccer scrimmage after her game. Not only was Carl able to participate—but so was his dad.
That’s right. A grandfather in his 70s was out there running, kicking, and laughing with the kids. He was the only grandparent on the field. That’s not luck. That’s the result of years of taking care of his body and prioritizing movement. And it was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we stay active for life.
Start Prioritizing Yourself Because You're Their Parent
When we say, "I need to take care of myself" it can feel selfish, but what if we shifted the language?
- "I need to take better care of my kids' mom."
- "I want to support my kids' dad so he can become a grandparent and even a great grandparent."
That change in perspective adds a layer of purpose to every workout, every meal choice, every decision to go to bed on time instead of staying up late scrolling. You’re not just doing this for you. You’re doing it for them, too.
Kids Learn By Watching
When your children see you prioritize your health, it sets the tone for what’s normal. They learn that exercise isn’t punishment—it’s part of life. That strong isn’t scary—it’s empowering. That showing up for yourself matters.
You become a role model not by being perfect, but by being committed.
It's Not Too Late
Whether your kids are toddlers, teenagers, or even adults, it’s never too late to start taking your health seriously. The workouts don’t have to be extreme. The goals don’t have to be flashy. The key is consistency.
And the payoff? More years playing, adventuring, traveling, and simply being there—not from the sidelines, but in the action.
